After Extra Time

Match Report

Chesham United welcomed title favourites Oxford City to The Meadow in the preliminary round of the League Cup, supported by a good crowd.  Chesham started with their fittest 11 and the two teams matched each other in earlier encounters.

City pressed from a corner and Masella did well to hold onto a ball while picking up a knock. At the other end Fraser was thwarted when the City keeper handled outside the area. Just before half-time, the Chesham captain Campbell got on the end of a Delves corner to give the home side the lead at the interval.

At the start of the second half Chesham had the upper hand but couldn't take their chances.  Oxford came back into the game and hit the woodwork before they equalised despite Campbell's efforts to clear off the line.

Kat Bowers and Nat Adams came on and livened up Chesham's attack but neither could convert some great opportunities. The visitors had decent possession, but they were not able to create any clear cut opportunities and the match moved into extra-time.

With the wind behind them City had the better of the first half of extra-time but it was still level when going into the final period.  Adams missed an opportunity to take the lead and both teams saw shots go agonisingly wide.  As it looked like the game was moving towards a penalty shoot-out, Adams showed great confidence to get across her defender only to be taken down and awarded a penalty. Without hesitation Kat Bowers took the ball and drove it past the keeper to send Chesham into the next round of the cup!

Chesham will travel to Winchester in two weeks time for the next round.

Squad Masella, Campbell, Darvill, Harris, Horwood, Gladwin, Delves, Smith (Bowers),  Euman (Adams), Lambert, Fraser.
