Match Report

5th November Southern Region Premier League

Oxford City 4 Chesham United 5

Chesham United Ladies won the first Premier League battle against Oxford City, the match finished 5-4 to the visitors, but it wasn’t quite the nail biter the score line indicated, a low sun and the bounce of the 3G unsettled the visitors.

A strong performance by Sarah Hazell the previous weekend, kept her starting place and on 18 minutes the 18 year old finished brilliantly as she volleyed in a difficult chance from Fraser’s cross after great work from wing back Paula Lambert.

Within 5 minutes City were back on level terms as Chesham struggled to keep their shape at the back.   The visitors  needed some clinical finishing and are fortunate to have Fraser on fire upfront, she raced on to Delves through ball and slotted past the keeper.  City were straight in behind Chesham’s defence and it took a great goal line clearance from Masella to keep them out.

Chesham managed to keep their shape and when Niamh Euman pressed and stole the ball in the attacking third it was great to see the U18 captain have the confidence to drive into the box and finish her opportunity making it 3-1.  Chesham couldn’t hang on to their two goal cushion as City drove straight through the visitors defence and slotted home.  Still midway through the half Chesham introduced Kat Bowers. Tash Smith found Fraser her initial shot was saved by the keeper she was first to react, smashing the re bound back into the net, 10 minutes left in the half and the home side could still sniff Chesham’s nervous back line, Harris sliced a clearance which  somehow  had enough spin on it to squeeze in at the far post, infuriating Masella.    The ref had his hands full calming the players before the interval.

Chesham were faced with a few stern words at half time, within 15 minutes City had levelled the score with a well taken finish.  Captain Campbells (pictured) experience finally settled the back line, Nat Adams was brought into the action and covered well to help them out. Chesham focused on keeping their shape and didn’t panic in possession, on 70 minutes Smith whipped in a ball just behind Fraser who managed to adjust and squeeze her shot into the corner.

Lambert replaced a tiring Smith and Harrison came on for Euman, Chesham kept the ball well, wasting time where necessary, and City never looked like they had enough in them to score again so the visitors grabbed a 4-5 victory to keep them firmly at the top of the table.

Team Masella, Campbell, Harris, Darvill, Lambert (Adams) Delves, Horwood, Smith, Euman (Harrison) Fraser, Hazell (Bowers)
